Re: Walgreens

i'm not sure that "corporate stores" have anything to do with increasing crime.  in fact, i'd guess just the opposite.  starbucks and mollie stone's are hardly what i'd consider high-crime establishments.  the alternative is to have portola lined with a bunch of grimy convenience stores that get robbed all the time.  also think about the fact that starbucks and creighton's are right next door to each other... and which one was it where that little girl got stabbed?  not the "corporate store," if i remember correctly.

Re: Walgreens

I'm happy to welcome a larger Walgreens in the neighborhood as the current store doesn't fulfill the needs of what my family needs from a local pharmacy.  It's too small, has limited inventory, and no other option is available. Plus, I'd prefer not to drive to drive elsewhere if possible.  If this new store can result in new landscaping, trees, signage, improvements, etc., it could actually improve the limited retail stretch on Portola.

All the new pavement on Portola is great to see as well.

Re: Walgreens

The stabbing may have happened at Creighton's but the chain stores bring more traffic and rif raf that would normally not inhabit the area if they did not see these well known chains.  I understand that change is necessary however building a huge walgreens will not be a good thing!  I agree our current walgreens is inadequate.  However when I make my trips to Safeway there is a LARGE walgreens there!  I refuse to shop at Mollie Stones, since I have found MANY products being sold past expiration dates, and fruits and veggies rotting the day after I get them home!

Re: Walgreens

i agree totally about mollie stone's; their quality is spotty  and their prices are outrageous.  and they seem to be pretty lax about allowing bums to stand in front and panhandle everyone coming out of the store.  but i'd be glad to see a larger walgreens there.  i'm sure there are plenty of people who would prefer to have a wider selection within walking distance instead of having to go down to west portal, ocean, or the inner sunset.  and i just don't see how expansion is going to hurt the area.  people go to walgreens to get diapers and medicine, not to hang out and cause trouble.  it's not exactly an attractive place for teenagers and drunks.  and as far as "riff raff" goes, the real risk comes from juvenile hall and SOTA.  until those two go - and they never will - there will be at least some potential for problems.

Re: Walgreens

and HOORAY for the improvements on portola!  i can actually drive down the street now without needing a realignment.  (sorry, off-topic but i wanted to second the thought.)

Sonny,

the design is being carefully worked on. it's totally deco. Plantings of trees part of the plan too...

I hope the planting is more than sticking two spindly sparse tress in the cement in front of the store.

Really that whole block down to Miraloma Market with its wider sidewalk should be landscaped in a co-ordinated fashion. Not just street trees but green strips or planters with smaller plants in them as well.

Re: Walgreens

There is a hearing this week at City hall with the the Planning Commission. It seems to me that there should have been some more substantial sharing of the proposed design before now. Does MPIC have this information and can it make it available? BTW, why would we want Art Deco architecture in 2008? Why can't we have soemthing that is well designed and that reflects current design trends, rather than an inauthentic style from a by-gone era?

Re: Walgreens

How about Walgreens hiding the recent late evening armed robberies!  I suppose we can expect more of them with a larger store.

Re: Walgreens

just go ask the workers, one of them closes and has been robbed.  She said they break in the back door

Re: Walgreens

Why can we expect more robberies with a new Walgreens?  Just wondering how you made that jump in logic.

Re: Walgreens

Well, the Planning Commssion approved the project as designed at their meeting on October 23rd. As I noted in a previous posting, the design is faux Art Deco, as in, not particularly good Art Deco. There are two major points to be made here - first, it is disingenuous for the building to look as though from another era and second, it will be inauthentic since the true measure of a building is how it is detailed and built and I assure you, it will not be built commensurate with the expectation - this is after all a corporate entity that does the least to assuage the public in order to maximize its financials. For those who find that statement a little harsh, please cite an example where Walgreens has delivered a well-designed, high-quality project. I am dismayed at the absence of discourse on the quality of what we build in our neighborhood, and the failure of MPIC to adequately consider this proposition. When MPIC last addressed this broadly, it was to collect neighbors' sentiment, which to my eye from this message board was at least 50% opposed. there should have been at least one addtional meeting in September sponsored by MPIC  to assemble a final, collective wisdom. Instead we can look forward to large expanses of stucco, ornamented with raised banding and cheap alumimum windows. Great job MPIC!

Re: Walgreens

I think this is a shame and a lost opportunity. The art deco style is not appropriate. IMO they should have gome with the "old" Miralom look - somewhat Spanish with terra  cota accents. This would not have cost any more to do.

Is there any chance to stop this? I was willing to support it maybe if the design complemented the neighborhood and there was lush landscaping - the latter I am not now holding my breath on. I can't support it now.

The previous poster notes "great work MPIC". I sort of have to agree. The MPIC was not able to do something about the horrid meadian strip opposite the Tower and Miralom blocks and now the islands which we were told would be landscaped and being put in a - surprise - no landscaping. Just cemented faux brick. Apparently they aren't able to do anything about Walgreens either.
